Whist

Many people are not whist aware with a form of poker card game called Whist. Whist has lot much of its popularity with the rise of Bridge but for many years it was popular as a medium for mild gambling and as an excuse for a pleasant social evening because of the prevalence of whist drives. These were, and are, often organized for local good cause.

How this poker game is played?

Four players take part as two pairs, partners sitting opposite each other. Each player cuts for deal; highest deals. In this context Ace counts low, but in the play Ace is high and the cards are dealt, the dealer turning the last card, his own, face up to denote trumps. The player to the left of the dealer leads a card, and other players must follow suit if possible, otherwise they may trump or discard. The four cards played constitute a trick, and the highest card of the suit led, or the highest trump, wins the trick. One player collects all the tricks for his side. At the end of the hand, the deal passes clockwise round the table. Scoring and settlement are optional, but traditionally each side scores a point for each trick above six made in one hand, and the game is won by the first side to reach either 5 or 7 points.
